One of MacuCare's most powerful ingredients is the antioxidant enhancer alpha-lipoic acid (ALA). ALA has the unique ability to be both water and fat-soluble, so is effective against a wide variety of oxidants and free radicals. ALA is converted in the body to its reduced form, dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA) – also an effective free radical scavenger. DHLA is also known as the 'universal antioxidant' because of its ability to recycle both vitamin E and vitamin C.

Lutein and zeaxanthin, two other active constituents in the formula, are extracted from calendula, otherwise known as the marigold plant. These two carotenoids are concentrated in the human lens and macula, and form the macular pigment, which helps protect the retina from oxidative damage. High concentrations of these pigments are also thought to support long-term macular health. Lutein has also been shown to be the most effective carotenoid for inhibiting lipid peroxidation. The eye is particularly sensitive to lipid peroxidation, because the retina contains high concentrations of lipids.

Taurine is also a powerful antioxidant which works particularly well in the eyes and the heart – two systems which have a greater potential for producing oxidants. Fortunately, this is where taurine concentrations are highest.
