wind
Wind is a term widely used in Chinese health philosophy. Like
the wind blowing, energy shoots through the system chaotically
in bolts and waves. Drunkenness, for example, is a
"windy" condition. Likewise, spasms, epileptic
seizures, twitching, paralysis, cramps, and muscular distortion
are all types of "wind." According to traditional
Chinese thinking, wind is related to imbalanced functioning of
the Liver. Modern scholars understand that many conditions which
the Chinese associated with the Wood element, which in turn are
related to the "Liver" function, are in fact related
to the nervous system, and in particular the peripheral nervous
system. For this reason, herbs that "calm the wind"
are generally considered to by related to the Liver function, as
described in Chinese herbalism. Gastrodia, Bupleurum, Uncaria
and Peony are important herbs that calm wind. They are all
related to the Liver.
