double-direction
activity
The ability to regulate functions so that normal bodily
functions are maintained is the result of double direction
activity. Certain herbs have the ability to regulate body
functions. They sedate excessive activity and stimulate
deficient activities, to the point that normalcy, or homeostasis
is achieved. This double direction activity is rare in the plant
kingdom, and sets the tonic herbs apart from all other
substances.
If a factor or set of factors causes certain functions to
elevate, the healthy body normally possesses the ability to
adapt in such a way that the function soon returns to a normal
condition.
For example, if some one is exposed to cold air, the body goes
through a very complex process in order to maintain body
temperature at its normal temperature. If the body is exposed to
hot air, the body goes through an equally complex process to
keep the body temperature cool, or in fact, the same as always.
If the body is deprived of oxygen, the body initiates a set of
responses designed to increase oxygen consumption so that normal
blood levels are maintained. If the body is exposed to excessive
oxygen, mechanisms are invoked which slow down oxygen
consumption.
Certain factors that would cause our body to bloat are
counteracted by physiological mechanisms that eliminate excess
fluids. Similarly, factors that would cause us to become
dehydrated stimulate us to consume and conserve fluids so as to
maintain normal bodily conditions.
This same type of regulatory activity takes place in thousands
of ways every day, whether we notice it or not. The human body
is a regulatory miracle. The double-direction tonic herbs are
nature's nutrients to the regulatory organs of functions of our
body and mind.
