pH,
ORP, and TDS Meters

to Jupiter Ionizer Users. The properties relative to
Jupiter ionizers are namely:
pH - indicating the
degree to which ionized water is either acidic or alkaline.
Periodic pH measurement needs to be done to verify which machine
setting should be used to maintain an optimum value of 8.5 - 9.0
pH for drinking. Each Jupiter Ionizer has a liquid test
kit with color chart for this purpose. A pH meter makes
this job easier and quicker with no liquid solutions to spill.
In addition, the displayed resolution is to 0.1 pH which is far
better than what can be deciphered from a color chart.
ORP -
or Oxygen Reduction Potential is the degree to which ionized
water is either oxidant (acid water) or antioxidant (alkaline
water). The unit of measure is millivolts (mV). For alkaline
water, the antioxidant or ORP value will be approximately -25 to
-250 mV. Acidic water will have a positive oxidative ORP value
from +25 to +600 mV or more. This is what we mean when we say
that the antioxidant properties of Jupiter water are measurable.
Again, the
negative ORP of ionized alkaline water means that there are an
abundance of extra electrons ( - ) that are readily given up to
be taken on by oxidative compounds within the body that might
otherwise attack cell tissue. An ORP meter is an especially
valuable tool for those wishing to verify the antioxidant
properties of ionized water for themselves and others.
TDS - or Total Dissolved Solids
correlates to the ability of water to conduct electricity. It is
also an index used to determine the concentration of dissolved
minerals. The more minerals that are dissolved, the more
conductive the water will be. A TDS meter is calibrated to read
in parts per million (PPM).
TDS meters will be valuable to those using well water or who
might suspect that their water is "Hard". Since
hardness is the result of an excess of mostly Calcium or
Magnesium compounds, a TDS meter will read high (300 ppm and
up). In some instances, water ionizers will not function well in
the presence of extra high TDS levels. If the water is too
conductive, the ionization chamber may over heat. When this
happens in a Jupiter Ionizer, a protective circuit restricts the
flow of current thus limiting the ionization effect. To overcome
this, the excess dissolved solids must be removed by
"softening" the water. This can be done with a whole
house system or a point of use softener, such as the counter-top
unit offered
by Bluestone Group. This is when a TDS
meter or
Hardness
Test Strips become especially valuable. When a
softener is used, the TDS should be monitored to gauge when it
is time for a whole house system to be re-generated, or a
counter-top cartridge to be replaced.

foremost instrumentation companies in the world.
The CHAMP
is extremely
compact and requires only one calibration point.
Calibration is like setting your watch to a radio
time-check. With a pH meter, it is using a pH reference of known
value as a starting point for accuracy. More complicated or
outdated meters can have 2 or more calibration points.

- The Hanna PRIMO
pocket meter for Total Dissolved Solids, will let you know when
your whole house water softener needs maintenance, or your
counter-top filter replaced. Periodic measurement will insure
that water hardness is under control and that your Jupiter
Ionizer will retain optimum efficiency. Evaluate your need for
water softening with BSG-TSH,
test strips for water hardness, then, if
softening is necessary, consider getting the Primo for an
on-going hardness monitoring program.
