Overview

PAIN? or PAIN RELIEF?
IT MAY DEPEND ON YOUR NUTRITION

In this issue we will see how diet and nutrition can influence the body's ability to modulate pain.

How the Body Creates the Sensation of Pain
.
Chronic pain is unmerciful and indiscriminate, affecting over 80 million Americans, young and old alike. The costs of pain, in both human and financial terms, are incalculable. But have you ever noticed how some people have a higher pain threshold than others? They never seem to be bothered by pain. Why is this so?

The sensation we feel as chronic pain is produced through a number of complex biochemical interactions. These interactions can be likened to a battle between the good guys, the body's natural pain relieving force, and the bad guys, the pain producers.

When the good guys are winning the battle, we are not bothered by pain. But when the bad guys begin winning, the resultant pain can make us miserable! People who have a higher pain threshold may have a stronger natural pain relieving force.

If you are bothered by pain it may be time to call for the nutritional re-enforcements to come to the rescue! Certain nutritional factors protect and support the good guys. They can be invaluable re-enforcements in winning the battle against pain. Let's see why.

The influence of diet on pain production
So what really causes an area of your body to become painful? It is a chemical reaction that involves a fatty acid called arachidonic acid. When arachidonic acid is freely circulating in the blood it reacts with certain enzymes that then produce chemicals that cause pain and inflammation. How can we limit the amount of free circulating arachidonic acid? By not eating certain foods that contain large amounts of arachidonic acid. Guess what is the highest, red meat. Followed by fowl, eggs, milk and seaweed. Yes even vegetarians have to watch their diet when addressing chronic pain.

That's right, if you are suffering from chronic pain, eating less or no red meat will reduce your body's ability to produce pain-creating chemicals in your blood. So a diet low in arachidonic acid is helping the good guys and you will feel less pain.

Nutrients that help the body produce less pain
.
There are nutritional products that further assist the body in handling the pain and inflammatory process. The details of how these substances work are complicated but in simple terms they act in one of three ways. First they help bind arachidonic acid and stop it from freely circulating. Turmeric, Evening Primrose Oil and EPA-DHA (fish lipid oils) are very helpful in this phase. Second they block various enzymes from ever reacting with any free circulating arachidonic acid. Quercetin, Bioflavanoids, Vitamin E and Garlic are the nutrients of choice for this phase. And thirdly they help cleanse the body tissues and blood of a variety of factors that contribute to the inflammatory and pain process. Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Trypsin and Chymotrypsin are the choices for helping rid the body of these toxins.

Here are some formulated products that contain the above nutrients in the appropriate amounts. Click on any one of them and you will go to an informative description of the product.
