| Losing
Fat not Lean Muscle Mass |
|
The
success of any weight loss program should not be
determined
solely by how much “weight” you lose. The key is to lose
what you have gained, fat. How can you do this? By
limiting
your caloric intake to a level that causes your body to
“burn” stored energy and at the same time not sacrifice muscle protein for
energy.
This delicate balance can not be achieved through crash
dieting which inevitably depletes muscle mass and
actually
increases your percentage body fat. If that was not bad
enough, losing muscle mass, which burns calories, causes
your metabolism to run even slower making weight gain
even
easier. Sound familiar? Yo-Yo dieting? |
| Improving
Body Composition |
 |
|
At
the conclusion of any weight loss program, your
percentage
of body fat should have decreased and little to no
muscle
mass should have been lost. If this is achieved the
ability
to maintain this weight loss is probable. Ideal weight
used
to be calculated by height /weight charts that were
created
by insurance companies.
The
flaw with these charts was that they were not based on
optimal health but on mortality. These charts have been
replaced by the Body Mass Index or BMI, which looks at a
person’s percent body fat , muscle mass and total
weight.
Experts believe this is a much more predictive indicator
of
health. Once again the key is to lose fat not muscle.
Did
you ever consider that your heart is a
muscle? |

Resting Energy Expenditure |

Many
physiologists use the term “set point” when discussing
weight loss. Your set point
involves this delicate balance between caloric
intake
and how much energy your body burns when at rest.
Assuming
that your body does burn calories when at rest, how does
it
do this and how can we maximize it? Well your basic
cellular
and organ function requires energy but your muscles are
burning energy as well. This is called your resting
energy
expenditure. The way to maximize this is to gain muscle
mass. Time to exercise! The more muscle you have, the
more
calories you will burn at rest, and when you exercise
you
are burning calories while you are building more
muscle.
Get it?
Remember,
one sensible meal per day, three servings of UltraMeal
and a minimum of twenty minutes of aerobic exercise per
day
and you will be successful at losing fat.
