Do
you have the constant feeling that you never have enough
energy, and that you can never seem to catch up on your
rest? Chronic exhaustion (in severe cases, known as
Chronic
Fatigue Syndrome or Candida) is a common problem in
our
society. Unfortunately, conventional medicine does not
address it comprehensively. This is precisely the type
of
problem that our modern health care system has
difficulty
with. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is not
clearly
understood by conventional medicine – primarily because
it
is not a clearly definable
condition.
It
is believed that CFS is caused by a number of
factors, including adrenal insufficiency due to stress
and
by a variety of different microbial invaders that
establish
a complex ecological network in a human body. The
microbial
mix may include viruses, bacteria, yeast, fungus and
other
parasites. The CFS may be further complicated by
exposure to environmental and household toxins. It would
not
be surprising if it is eventually found that genetic
factors
play a role in one’s disposition to this syndrome.
Antibiotics often do not help, and simple rest rarely
results in improvement. Vitamin therapies may be of some
benefit, but rarely prove totally successful. Because
CFS
is not caused by the exact same set of factors and
microbes
in any two individuals, conventional medicine cannot
designate a treatment protocol. No single drug will
every
“cure” CFS. As a result, conventional medicine
tends to ignore the problem.
Those
of us who practice Chinese tonic herbalism, on the other
hand, consider chronic exhaustion to be a very serious
problem because it limits our productivity, lowers our
resistance to disease, limits the amount of fun that
life
could and should be, and often leads to depression. In
Asia,
it is also believed the chronic exhaustion will result
in
premature aging. The age-old problem of chronic
exhaustion
has been deeply studied in the Orient. It is well
understood
from an Asian perspective, and solutions have been
developed
that are often seemingly “miraculous,” though in fact
they are simply based on good nutritional and herbal
logic.

| What
Causes Chronic Exhaustion? |
 |
|
The
cause of chronic exhaustion is associated with a
deficiency
of the “three treasures,” Jing, Qi and Shen.
Jing
energy
is now associated with our hormones and deep reserves of
energy. If you are chronically exhausted, it is probable
that your adrenals are not functioning at an optimal
level.
Jing tonics are known to replenish the hormones and
functions associated with the adrenals, reproductive
system
and brain. Herbs such as Deer
Antler, Morinda
officinalis, Eucommia
ulmoides, Polygonum
multiflorum and Lycium
chinensis are well-established Jing tonics that
can
restore depleted adrenal function if used over a period
of
time. Formulas like Return
to Youth Formula, Strength
Builder, Ant
Essence, Jing and Supreme
Creation are very powerful sources of Jing
energy.
Shen
is our mental, emotional and spiritual energy. If you
are
depressed, anxious or overly stressed, your immune
system
will not be as effective. Stress itself can be quite
exhausting and is often a major contributing factor in
chronic exhaustion and CFS. Herbs like Reishi
mushroom, Lycium, Bupleurum chinense
and Pearl, are well known for their ability to
improve state of mind. Duanwood Reishi, Pearl Shen,
Shen Drops, and Bupleurum
and Dragon Bone are
fabulous anti-stress mood adjustors. |

| Using
the Two Basic Principles to Treat
Exhaustion |
 |
|
Rule
1.
In treating disease, treat the human being as a whole.
In
clinical practice, see the whole human body, not just an
illness. See the patient as a whole, a unified body,
mind
and spirit.
Rule
2.
The improvement or the curing of illness primarily
depends
on the ability of a person to resist disease from
within.
The basic point of view of Traditional Chinese Medicine
in
treatment is known as "assist the positive,
eliminate
the noxious.”
Positive
represents the functions of regulation, defense and
adaptation of the organism. Noxious represents
all
the disadvantage factors that hinder the development of
the
normal organism or that lead to sickness.
Thus,
the therapeutic methods are assisting the positive and
eliminating the noxious; however, generally, assisting
the
positive is primary.
This
is precisely where tonic herbs come in. They “assist the
positive.” They boost our ability to adapt and to defend
ourselves against invasion by microbes. They help
regulate
the organs and systems so that we function at an optimal
level. For this reason, tonic herbalism is known in the
Orient as the “superior medicine,” while medicinal
herbalism is known as the “inferior medicine.”
Those
who have suffered from chronic exhaustion for too long,
owe
it to themselves to try a tonic herbal program
consisting of
Jing, Qi and Shen tonic formulations.
Of course, it is always essential that if
a
person experiences a problem like chronic exhaustion,
they
consult their physician and rule out serious problems
that
require conventional medical intervention. It should be
noted that in Asia these tonic herbal formulas are often
used in conjunction with conventional drugs to
strengthen
the body and mind while drugs attack specific problems.
This
is known as Fu Zheng Therapy. If it turns out
that
you are one of the millions of people suffering from
Chronic
Fatigue Syndrome who cannot find a solution, the Chinese
tonic herbs may very well be a surprisingly effective
solution. | |
